Inspo
Slushy's vision for this costume was a ruffled, layered top and skirt with these colors. Basically, each layer would be a patterned fabric in with the base being the majority of one of these colors. Something pretty, light, and colorful for the summer months. For the top, we were looking to have it off the shoulder with ruffles all the way around. The skirt will be the same pattern of layers as the top with an elastic waistband.
Materials
It's kind of a random mix of fabrics! The yellow, turqoise, and black are all different knits without any real stretch. I couldn't find the coral/redish color in a good pattern, so I got the lace polka dot and a satin in the color. The plan is to sew the lace onto the satin to make it look like a pattern. I also bought A LOT of crinoline because all of the layers will be backed with crinoline to give the ruffles some structure and help them stand out sort of like a tutu (if that makes sense?).
The Process
This ended up being one of the most time consuming costumes I've made! I underestimated how much fabric ruffles require... So what took so long was cutting these extremely long pieces (96inches for the skirt and 120inches for the top), pinning them to the crinoline, sewing them together, and serging the edge before any actual ruffling. The coral color also required me sewing the lace to the satin before the crinoline (rip). After the long pieces were ready, I sewed a basting stitch all the way down the side and then pulled it through gently to create the ruffles. After each piece was ruffled, I created the waistband and base for the top and skirt that the ruffles would be sewn to.
Final Product
Voila! The ruffles turned out really nice (even though they took forever) and I really loved how the patterns and colors all came together. The crinoline worked really well for giving the ruffles more structure and not ending up droopy. Thanks for reading along and seeing how this costume came together :)
