Inspo
The inspo for this one was based off a Naomi Smalls costume actually. I had a photo of it at some point, but I can't seem to find it and queens post so often that it'll take me hours to scroll back through years of tagged photos. The basic inspiration from it though was a satin skirt and bra with a satin jacket. Even though there isn't a ton of extras in terms of stones or feathers, the satin is so shiny that the costume will really light up on stage.
Materials
It's harder than you think to take good photos of satin that show the color well. It just reflects everything, but ya there aren't a ton of different materials in this costume. I used foam cups for the bra, silver satin, buckles to make the straps on the bra, and rivets for the straps as well.
The Process
It was super important to make accurate patterns so the end result fit properly because there isn't much room for error with satin (it won't stretch even if you ask it nicely). There also ended up being a couple unusual shapes in the patterns. I wanted the skirt to look as clean as possible and not have too many seams. The front and back are one piece, and then I made the side pieces separately. When sewing the skirt together, I just made sure the pieces had the right amount of overlap. The jacket was a dropped shoulder so that the actual shoulder had a more rounded shape. I had foam cups that I sewed the fabric onto for the bra and built buckled straps to finish it off.
Final Product
As you can see, the costume turned out shiny AF even without a bunch of sparkly embellishments. The satin was definitely an experience to work with (it's so slippy), but it's definitely beautiful so it was worth the headaches. Thanks for following how this costume came together. I hope you enjoyed the video and/or this lil post!
