Inspo

Genesis may not forgive me for sharing their sketch, but I think it's actually pretty good and really shows the original idea and how we brought it to life. For the Ottawa Capital Pride Pageant, there was a runway category for their drag look that represents their style. Genesis wanted to go with a more alternative styled costume with a pointed shoulder bodysuit, leather chaps, pointed finger loops, and some lace cut outs.

Materials

The main body suit fabric is a 4 way stretch cotton with a lightening pattern. The lace will be used in cut outs at the ribs, and the majority of the sleeves. The leather (well pleather) will be used for the chaps and belt. Not pictured, are some foam shoulder pads that I'm going to use to make the pointed shoulders!

The Process

Most of this costume was fairly straight forward, with just some slight twists. The patterns were mostly straight forward, but the shoulders needed some extra space to put the foam inserts, the sleeves went to a point for the finger loops, and the cutouts in the ribs and sleeves for the lace needed their allowance in the patterns. To make the pointed shoulder inserts, I used foam shoulder pads and cut them into shapes to make the triangles and the base. I used some scrap batting to stuff the triangle so that it would have solid structure, and then glued it all together. Lastly, I wrapped it in the lightening fabric and sewed it on to make sure there would be no way of seeing the foam. After the bodysuit was done, I just stuffed the foam triangle into the space I left in the shoulder and sewed them in so that they would stand straight up.

Final Product

This costume came together super well and really achieved the look Genesis was hoping for. I hadn't done structured pieces like the shoulders or chaps before this costume so it was also a really fun learning experience! I hope you enjoyed getting a closer look at how this came together. I wish I had made a video for it because there was quite a bit more to it but this will have to suffice.
