Inspo

If you've ever watched RuPaul's Drag Race, you are well aware of every season's iconic episode, Snatch Game. If not, basically the contestants do celebrity impersonations on a panel. So Kimmy Couture chose Ariana Grande for her celebrity impersonation. If you know Ariana, you're probably familiar with her Sweetener tour costume, which made this a pretty obvious choice for Kimmy to do in Snatch Game.

Materials

I used a lighter colored purple in a 4 way stretch cotton/lycra blend fabric to make the 2 piece, and substitute out the darker purples. I used elastic, which I ended up having to double up, to make the straps for the bra and foam cups for the bra padding.

The Process

Kimmy was looking to have the costume re-made/altered/re-sized to have a lighter purple in place of the darker purple, and convert the base from a full body suit to a 2 piece. It ended up being a WAY more involved process than it sounded in the description. Substituting out the darker purple basically resulted in recreating everything except the organza sleeves. My first step though, which I can't recommend enough in alteration projects, was taking pictures of every bit of the garments to make sure it goes back together how it was made originally. After that I seam ripped (very carefully), and used some of the pieces as a sort of pattern stencil to recreate the new pieces in the lighter color. For the sleeve alteration, I was making it smaller so instead of tearing everything apart, I pinned across the amount I wanted smaller and just sewed across it, cut away the extra, and serged the edge to clean it up. This saved A TON of time. After re-making the cuffes, neck, and skirt pieces, I reassembled the skirt and shoulder pieces. Then I made the bra and panty in the lighter purple and we were all done!

Final Product

It was such a surreal experience to see something I made not only on TV, but on Drag Race of all shows. When I started making garments I never thought I'd see them in that light. It was amazing and I'm very grateful to have had this opportunity!
