Inspo
For some reason I developed this obsession with any clothing made with "sherpa" or "teddy" fabric. It just seems so cozy, but the texture is also really warm, inviting, and different but without being too extra (in my opinion at least). I was also in search of a longer, more stylish jacket than the typical hard shell winter jacket we are stuck wearing all the time. Jackets are also ALWAYS black here and I wanted a slightly different color, but it still be a color I can wear with most thing. So I set off to find a good sherpa fabric in what I was hoping would be a sort of camel/caramel brown.
Materials
The jacket is sort of one giant blob of color/fabric, so I wanted to have a nice patterned knit for the liner to give the jacket a bit of an extra touch. I also needed the jacket to be warm because it be cold af in Canada. The "fill" for the jacket is a heavy weight batting, and I actually double layered it just to make sure it was extra warm because I hate being cold. I decided to go with buttons, for fashion over function because it'll definitely be a bit less warm.
The Process
This project really pushed my abilities and patience. I sorted of needed to make the jacket 3 times and in different steps. I needed to make the jacket with just the batting, then the liner, and then the sherpa material before making the different pieces of the jacket with each of those 3 materials. Once I had each piece of the jacket with the liner, batting, and sherpa outside, I could then actually assemble the entire jacket.
Final Product
The jacket actually turned out better than I ever thought it would. It's become my favorite jacket to wear and probably the most complimented thing I've ever owned. It's warm enough for any of our coldest days and I really love the length and style of it. I think what I learned most from this project is that I can bring any of my ideas to life and some times you're better off just doing it yourself to get exactly what you want. I hope you enjoyed either watching the video or reading through my process.
