Harem Pants

This may be surprising, but I've wanted a pair of pants like this for quite some time. I never tried super hard to find them online or anything, but over the years I'd always look for them in stores like Lulu Lemon or other active wear stores. Occasionally I'd find something close, but never exactly what I was looking for. So I decided it was time to just make a pair for myself!

The official name of the style of pants is "harem pants," which I wasn't even sure of until after I shot the video for them. They are basically a drop crotch jogger with a very light and stretchy fabric. They are SUPER comfy and you can basically do anything in them. Our Canadian winters can be rough so the timing for making them was perfect. They aren't quite warm enough to wear out, but are amazing for staying cozy and comfortable inside.

I have a pair of the Lulu Lemon ABC joggers (also super comfy) that I really like the fit of. So I used them as a sort of stencil for making the pattern to help with having the right length and waist. It was pretty easy to just sketch out the difference in shape while making the pattern by adding a lot of width through the thigh/hip area. I also made pockets for the pants, which was harder to do than I thought it'd be, but pockets are pretty much essential for me if I actually want to wear them often.

The main fabric for the pants is a 4 way stretch cotton (I unfortunately don't have the specific blend, sorry!). The ankle cuffs and waist band are a fairly thick rib knit, and then I just used some string to make the draw string. I went with all black, obviously, because I wasn't totally sure what I was doing, but you could definitely make these with an amazing pattern/color that would take them to the next level.

In the end, I'm super happy with how they turned out! I was fairly new to making pants when I took the project on and I thought they were a fairly forgiving first go at making pants. After wearing them a bunch, I feel like a pair of pants like this belong in every person's wardrobe. I hope you enjoyed either watching the video or reading through this description.
