Inspo

There were a few things at play here. I had been wanting to make more "normal" clothing wear, and was waiting to get a cover stitch machine so I could have polished finishings. I also have kept extra fabric from the shirts that people want cropped from my embroidery orders. And while I was excited to make more "normal" clothing, I wanted to bring some embroidery to it and do something a lil different.

Materials

Nothing too fancy with this one! I have some really soft sweatshirt weight knit in grey. I couldn't find a rib knit that I really liked so I'm going to use the same fabric for the bottom hem, cuffs, and neckline. I have a ton of scrap t-shirt pieces in a bunch of colors from when people order my embroidery items and prefer them cropped. So I chose this sort of red/mauve color because I think it'll really pop on the grey.

The Process

The process was mostly straight forward for the base of the sweatshirt. I used one of my crewneck sweatshirts that I really like the fit of as a stencil to make the pattern and get the fit/shape that I want. The more interesting part of the process was the embroidery. I wanted the "unique" to sort of pop off the sweater and give the design some dimension. So I created the "unique" design on my computer and digitized it to only embroider the outline of the letters. I then pinned the fabric onto the sweater, hooped it, and embroidered the "unique" outline onto the fabric. After that, I just had to cut away the excess (a tedious process I'll admit).

Final Product

The sweater turned out exactly as I hoped! I think the writing turned out really great and really pops, especially in person. Trimming away the excess fabric was very tedious, but I'm glad I found a use for this extra fabric instead of wasting it. It was also so much fun getting to use my new coverstitch machine! It's definitely a bit of a learning process to use well but it's amazing having really professional finishings on the clothing I'm making now. Anways, I hope this was a fuuunnn read for you!
